The objects of this Act are to (a) ensure that (i) building work, plumbing work and demolition work, including the design, and maintenance of domestic, commercial and industrial buildings, meets, or exceeds, the minimum national construction standards; and(ii) building work, plumbing work, demolition work and maintenance work do not negatively affect the health and safety of people; and(iii) owners, building services providers, practitioners and councils comply with the requirements of this Act and the National Construction Code when performing work, or performing functions and exercising powers, under this Act; and(b) provide for (i) the creation of buildings that are accessible to, and contain facilities for, people with disabilities; and(ii) the creation of energy-efficient and water-efficient, and sustainable, buildings that minimise impact on the environment; and(iii) the legal protection of building services providers, practitioners and owners in certain circumstances in respect of work performed in accordance with this Act; and(c) facilitate and promote cost-effective construction of buildings; and(d) encourage an efficient, innovative and competitive building industry.
