1 Local Government Amendment Bill 2007 Local Government Amendment Bill 2007 Explanatory Notes Title of the Bill Local Government Amendment Bill 2007 Introduction On 19 April 2007, Parliament determined there was a need for structural reform of local government to create stronger councils with greater capacity to deliver services and infrastructure to Queensland communities. The Local Government Reform Implementation Act 2007 established new structural arrangements for Queensland local government. The Act also made provision to prevent local governments from conducting polls about local government reform matters. Objective of the Bill The primary objective of the Bill is to remove provisions which prevent local governments from conducting polls about local government reform. How objectives are achieved The objective is achieved by omitting the relevant provisions. Alternative method of achieving the policy objectives There are no other viable alternatives to amending the Local Government Act 1993 that will achieve the policy objectives. Estimated cost for Government implementation There are no costs for the State in association with these amendments. Consistency with Fundamental Legislative Principles The Bill is consistent with fundamental legislative principles as defined in section 4 of the Legislative Standards Act 1992.
